Our Bath Digital Festival Event: inspiring children in the world of technology and innovation

The Bath Digital Festival brings people and technology together. This year, we invited year 5 and 6 pupils to come and visit us at DoodleHQ for our DoodleMaths Developer event.
Think back to when you were a child. What was your response when your grown ups asked you the famous question: “What do you want to be when you’re older?” It can sometimes be difficult for children to make a connection with the subjects and content they learn at school and how it relates to the big wide world.
It is important that children have opportunities to meet experts doing a wide range of jobs, to motivate and inspire the opportunities that are open to them. This is why we decided to hold our DoodleMaths Developer event at Bath Digital Festival; to inspire children in the world of technology and innovation.
Upon arrival, teams were greeted by the founders of DoodleMaths, where they were invited to enjoy some brain-fuelling snacks and a drink with them before starting the workshop. Our DoodleMaths experts then kick-started the workshop by sharing their exciting roles within the DoodleMaths company, demonstrating why it is so important to recognise and appreciate how our strengths and personal skills can be brought to a team – as well as finding out some of our DoodleMaths secrets! In teams of four, children were then set on the DoodleMaths Developer Challenge. The challenge provided the children with a hands-on experience of planning, designing and pitching their very own DoodleMaths winter-themed game.
Whilst planning and designing their DoodleGames, each team was allocated a DoodleMaths team member but were able to spend five minutes with our chief programmer and graphic designer to ask for their top tips. Once the time was up, teams were brought together and gave their DoodleGame pitch to the rest of the teams and our judges. From throwing mince pies at Father Christmas to catching snowflakes in sleighs, we were presented a wonderful array of DoodleGame ideas, all of which took into consideration the graphical assets and physical properties. The children truly mastered the workshop and we think it’s fair to say became DoodleMaths Developers!
The event was a great success and we are very proud of all our Doodlers that took part. Make sure you watch out for our latest competitions and events!
