FAQs about Year 1 maths

By the end of Year 1, children should be confident working with numbers up to 100 using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. They should know the 2, 5, and 10 times tables and understand simple fractions.

They should also be able to:

  • Tell the time to the nearest 5 minutes

  • Describe 2D and 3D shapes by their properties

  • Read simple charts, including pictograms and tally charts

As they finish Year 1, students are expected to meet a range of key learning goals before moving on to Year 2 maths.

For a full overview of everything your child should know by the end of Year 1, check out our complete Year 1 curriculum guide!

There are no formal maths assessments in Year 1. Teachers track students’ progress using a variety of informal assessments and observations throughout the year.
