The 11 Plus Exam is an assessment that some learners will take at the start of Year 6 in order to apply to certain secondary schools. It’s an optional exam, but some schools do require students to achieve a certain mark in order to be eligible to apply for a place.

How the 11+ papers are marked can vary across different schools and local authorities. Some third-party test providers, like GL Assessment, may mark papers for schools and send them the results.
If the test is one that an individual school have developed, then the school will likely have internal markers that will score pupils’ tests.
In either case, students’ papers will be scored out of the total number of marks available. After this, their scores will be converted to a standardised score, using a standardised scores table.
In order to ensure the tests are fair and not influenced by the age of pupils at the time of the assessment, schools will use an 11 Plus standardised scores table. This table allows markers to adjust a learner’s raw score using their exact age in order to give standardised 11 Plus scores.
These tables may vary across different schools and exam providers due to the number of marks that each test is out of. Usually, a standardised score of 100 indicates the average score, or what examiners expect the average standard to be.
Here’s an example of what a standardised table might look like. The raw score column indicates the marks a child achieved in their paper (e.g. 40 out of 50). This raw score is then tracked across the table to where it coincides with the child’s age (the top row) to give a standardised score.

The 11 Plus Exam results 2024 will likely be made available in mid-October, ahead of the deadline for secondary school applications. It is up to each school or local authority to decide upon the exact date they’ll release their results.
How you receive your child’s 11 Plus Exam results 2024 very much depends on their school. Some schools may send home results by email while others will send letters home with students.
The exact date that results will be sent home will also be determined by the school. Most likely, you will have your child’s results by mid-October in order that you can consider secondary schools in time for the application deadline which is usually around the 31st of October.
Once you’ve received your learner’s 11+ exam results it’s then time to apply to secondary schools! You must complete and return an application with your local authority by the deadline which is usually just before midnight on the 31st of October.
On this application, you must name the school or schools you’d like your child to be considered for a place at. It is recommended that you choose a few schools on this application to ensure they get a place somewhere that they’d like to go!
After the deadline, schools will consider the applications and will consider a range of criteria including learners’ 11+ exam results to select the successful applicants. You will then be notified of your child’s secondary school place on ‘offer day’ which is usually the 1st of March.
Following the 11 Plus Exam results 2023, around 83% of students received offers from their first or second-choice schools.
If you are unhappy with the place your learner is offered, there is the opportunity to make an appeal. You will have 20 days to submit your appeal, and your local authority must hear your case within 40 days.

Results are usually released around four to six weeks after students sit their 11 Plus Exam.
For example, the 11 Plus Exam results 2023 would’ve been released around the middle of October after students sat their tests within the first two weeks of September.
Scores above 120 would usually be within the top 10% of the year group, though this can vary across different schools and local authorities.
While there is generally no 11 Plus pass mark, students receive a standardised score that’s usually between 70 and 140. A score of 100 indicates that a pupil has achieved the average mark for their cohort.
Each school is different but generally speaking the 11 Plus Exam results will be released in mid-October. It’s best to check with your school directly about what date they anticipate releasing the results.
