Crafted by our team of education specialists, Doodle’s baseline assessment mode is now more accurate and streamlined than ever before.
What is baseline assessment mode?
When a child first starts using Doodle, our clever algorithm, Proxima™, will ask them a series of questions to determine their current level and confidence. This helps Doodle to create a unique work programme tailored each learner’s strengths and weaknesses.
At this early stage, it’s really important to boost a child’s confidence rather than dent it by asking lots of tricky questions. The questions Doodle asks will soon adapt to ensure each child scores between 70% and 90% correctly, helping to reassure and motivate them from the moment they get started.
By asking questions at just the right level, Proxima will build a deep understanding of each child’s ability, helping to create them a fully personalised experience.
How to use baseline assessment mode
The number of questions asked in baseline assessment mode will depend on a child’s age and the programme they’re using:
In DoodleMaths:
- Children over the age of five and a half will be asked eight sets of five questions
- Children under the age of five and a half will complete the baseline assessment if they rate themselves as being confident in maths. Those who don’t will be given a starting point in the programme based on their age and current confidence level in maths.
In DoodleEnglish and DoodleSpell:
- Children over the age of five and a half will be asked six sets of five questions
- Children under the age of five and a half won’t go through baseline assessment mode. Instead, they’ll be given a starting point in the programme based on their age and confidence level in English.
To start the baseline assessment process, create a Doodle account or log in to your existing parent account and add a new child from the homescreen.
After having a go at a few sample exercises, your child will be asked their first set of questions.
Encourage them to work independently and to keep going, even if they find things a little challenging — this is simply Doodle’s way of working out their strengths and weaknesses.
Receiving help at this stage may cause their work to be incorrectly assessed, leading to the programme becoming too challenging.
After completing the first set of questions, they’ll be taken to Doodle’s hub, the Learning Zone. They can start the next set of exercises in the calibration by pressing the purple Baseline icon when they’re ready.
After the baseline assessment has been completed, a green New icon will appear in the Learning Zone. This means that Doodle has finished creating them a personalised experience!
