Key takeaways

  • A maths assessment gives you a clear baseline of where your child currently stands, helping you spot target areas to support
  • Key Stage 1 maths covers number, place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, shape, measurement, and position – all of which feature in this test
  • Regular, low-stakes maths assessments reduce anxiety and help learners build confidence over time

Knowing where your child stands in maths is one of the most valuable insights you can gain as a parent supporting their learning. The best way to do this is with regular assessment. That being said, a maths assessment doesn’t need to be stressful or formal! In fact, many teachers do little, informal assessments throughout the week to keep track and discover how best to support their learners.

The quiz below covers every major strand of the Key Stage 1 maths curriculum for children in Years 1 and 2 (ages 5 to 7). Some learners may need you to read the questions out to them, but let them select an answer from the multiple-choice options.

Before we dive into the quiz, it is useful to take a quick look at the Key Stage 1 maths curriculum to understand exactly what our Year 1 and Year 2 students are expected to learn. Knowing the skills that sit under each heading can help you make sense of your child’s quiz results – so if they find a particular section tricky, you’ll know what to focus on!

Key Stage 1 Maths Overview

The Key Stage 1 maths curriculum builds on what kiddos have learned during their EYFS years, and covers:

Number and place value

  • Counting, reading, and writing numbers 100
  • Understanding what each digit in a two-digit number represents
  • Counting in 2s, 5s and 10s
  • Identify odd and even numbers

Addition and subtraction

  • Add and subtract single-digit and two-digit numbers (mentally and using concrete aids)
  • Solve simple word problems
  • Understand subtraction as taking away and finding the difference between two numbers

Multiplication and division

  • Know 2, 5 and 10 times tables
  • Understand that multiplication is repeated addition
  • Understand division as sharing or grouping equally
  • Connect multiplication and division as opposite operations

Fractions

  • Recognise and find halves and quarters of shapes and quantities
  • Understand that fractions represent equal parts of a whole

Measurement

  • Beginning to use standard units (e.g. cm and kg)
  • Recognise and begin to use coins and notes
  • Tell the time to the nearest 5 minutes

Geometry

  • Name common 2D and 3D shapes
  • Describe shapes by their properties
  • Explore position and direction (turns and four compass points)

Key Stage 1 Maths Assessment

Time to let your little ones loose on our KS1 maths assessment. There’s no time limit – this quiz is purely to indicate their knowledge and skill across the curriculum. Remember, kiddos aren’t expected to read it themselves; some might need adult help to read out the questions.

At the end of the quiz, learners will receive their score out of 20, and we’ll give some helpful next steps to support their learning!

What to do next

However your child got on with this KS1 maths assessment, the most important thing is that you have a clearer picture of their maths knowledge. A maths assessment like this one is a starting point, not an official judgement. If you notice that certain sections cause difficulty (in my experience, it’s often fractions or telling the time), start there.

Little and often is the key: even five minutes of maths practice each day adds up to meaningful progress over time! Every child learns at their own pace, and with the right support, every child can build confidence in maths.
