What is grammar?

Grammar teaches us how to use language correctly through rules. When we understand grammar rules, we can be more expressive, detailed, and on-point when we speak and write. In other words, understanding grammar will make you sound far more exciting and clever to everyone!

Grammar definition

Grammar is a set of rules that governs our language. There are so many grammar rules in English we couldn’t possibly list them all here. but we can point out some great ones to keep in mind. Let’s dive in!

Grammar rules

  • Subject-verb agreement: Subject-verb agreement ensures sentences are clear, accurate, and understandable. Subject-verb disagreement often leads to confusion.
  • Proper use of tenses: Verb tenses convey when an action or event occurs—past, present, or future. This temporal information is essential for providing context and understanding the sequence of events.
  • Sentence structure: Well-structured sentences contribute to the overall coherence and flow of a text, making it easier to read and follow.
  • Punctuation rules: Punctuation is important because it clarifies meaning, indicates pauses and stops, and ensures the accuracy and readability of written language.
  • Word order: How we order words matters. We do it so naturally, that often we don’t even think about it. We can’t say ‘the jumped dog brown fence over quick the’ that is just a big old jumble. Introduce word order and suddenly you understand ‘ the quick brown dog jumped over the fence’.

A determiner comes before a noun and introduces it, for example: ‘this plate’, ‘that beach’, ‘my friend’.
