### Numbers definition

Numbers are symbols or words we use to represent a specific quantity or order. They help us count, measure, and compare things. Learn more about numbers and find practice problems on our maths app.

### Types of numbers

Numbers come in various types, each with its own properties:

• Whole Numbers: These start from 0 and go on like 1, 2, 3, and so forth.
• Integers: These include both positive and negative whole numbers, like -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3…
• Rational Numbers: Numbers that can be expressed as a fraction, where both the numerator (top number) and the denominator (bottom number) are integers, and the denominator isn’t zero.
• Irrational Numbers: Irrational numbers can’t be written as simple fractions. The decimal goes on forever without repeating. An example is the square root of 2.
• Prime Numbers: Numbers greater than 1 that are divisible only by 1 and themselves. Examples include 2, 3, 5, and 7.
• Composite Numbers: Numbers that have more than two factors. For instance, 4 is composite because it can be divided by 1, 2, and 4.

### Numbers in everyday life

Numbers are everywhere! From telling the time to counting money, measuring ingredients for a recipe, or knowing our age, we constantly use numbers to make sense of the world around us.

• Morning Routine: When we wake up, we glance at the clock to tell the time, ensuring we start our day right.
• School Tasks: Whether it’s tallying up scores in a sports game during Physical Education, using a ruler to draw straight lines in art class, or figuring out how many pages you’ve read in a week for English class, numbers are a staple in school.
• Shopping: Heading to the store, we use numbers to budget our expenses, compare prices, and calculate discounts.
• Baking and Cooking: In the kitchen, we rely on them to measure out just the right amount of flour or sugar for that perfect dessert. Plus, setting the oven or microwave to the right temperature and time is all about numbers!
• Music: If you play an instrument, you use numbers to understand rhythms, count beats, and even to tune your instrument to the right note.
• Gaming: Whether you’re keeping score in a board game with family or trying to reach the next level in a video game, numbers are key! They help you know how many points you’ve earned, lives you have left, or even how much time you have remaining.
• Special Occasions: We celebrate birthdays, mark anniversaries, and recall significant dates.
• Fitness: Set fitness goals or determine the distance of our morning jog, all thanks to numbers. Even counting reps while doing exercises revolves around numbers!

Numbers have been a part of human history for thousands of years and they weren’t exactly “invented” by one person. Different civilizations developed their own number systems independently. For instance, the Sumerians and Babylonians in Mesopotamia had one of the earliest known numbering systems. The numbers we use today, called Arabic numerals, have origins in India and were brought to Europe through Arabic scholars.
