All about Year 5 maths

Years 5 and 6 are the upper years of your learner’s Key Stage 2 journey. During these years students will be developing their ability to work more independently and apply all the maths skills they’ve developed so far!

What's taught in Year 5 maths?

Maths for Year 5 learners is split into seven key areas of focus. There’s a lot to cover this year so let’s take a closer look at the targets for each area.

Number

The area of number is further broken down into four categories; place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, and fractions.

In Year 5, as they work with numbers up to 1,000,000 students will:

Measurement

Geometry

  • Identify 3D shapes from their 2D representations
  • Identify acute, obtuse, and reflex angles
  • Draw and measure angles in degrees
  • Know that a full turn is 360° and a half turn (or straight line) is 180°
  • Translate a shape’s reflection using a grid

Statistics

  • Continue to solve problems using information from different types of graphs and charts

Are there Year 5 maths assessments?

Thankfully, there are no formal maths assessments in Year 5, so the pressure is off this year! Learners will still be assessed informally throughout the year by their teacher to make sure they’re on track with their learning.

FAQs about Year 5 maths

By the end of Year 5, students should have a really good grasp of all concepts of number. That includes using the four operations across all areas of maths and understanding the relationship between decimals, fractions and percentages.

As our learners approach the end of their primary school journey, there are a lot of targets that they’ll need to meet by the end of the year.
